Meet some of our people!

  • A cook in an MSLI teal polo shirt and a blue patterned headwrap stands with her arms folded in a dry, open field

    Cook

    Ana Ubisse

    School
    Machua School
    Daily routine
I get to the school at 6am to start the fire for boiling 100 liter pots of water to make beans and xima. By 11:30am, the first groups of kids start lining up for lunch. I usually serve the beans, making sure each child gets the right portion. By 1:30pm, we've finished serving, and have to wash the pots so they are ready for tomorrow's meal!
    Favorite part of the job
Seeing the kids run from the classroom to the lunch line.
  • A young woman in a yellow top and white trousers stands beside a brick building and a water tank

    Preschool Teacher

    Maria Machele

    School
    Soveia School
    Daily routine
I get to the school at 7am to get the classroom ready for when children start arriving at 7:30am. We start the day with a song and a story. Then we play with the kids outside until the breakfast is ready at 9am. After breakfast I focus on the lesson of the day, either teaching the alphabet or numbers. Lunch is at 12pm and then the younger kids sometimes need a nap, so we set them up in the back of the room while the older kids play outside.
    Favorite part of the job
    Singing songs with the children.
  • A smiling woman in a turquoise headwrap, a striped polo shirt and a patterned capulana stands on a sandy path in front of a large tree

    Farmer

    Otília Mondlane

    School
    Chate village
    Daily routine
I go to my farm before sunrise to try and beat the heat. My farm is a 45 minute walk from my home because there is better farmland near the river. Most of my farm has beans but I also have vegetables in one corner. Some days I am watering the plants, other days I am inspecting for pests or weeding. I bring a small pot to cook xima and pumpkin leaves at the farm. At the end of the day, I fill up jerry cans of water to take home.
    Favorite part of the job
Earning money when I sell my beans to MSLI!
  • A bus driver in glasses and a bright blue T-shirt, seatbelt on, turns to the camera from the driver's seat

    School Bus Driver

    Taquidir Adamo

    School
    Manjangue Secondary School
    Daily routine
I start picking students up from Chate villages at 6:30am and get them to Manjangue Secondary School by 7:30am, in time for morning formation. I then go back to the villages to get the students who study in the afternoon session. I bring them to Manjangue by 10:30am so that they can spend some time with the Avança+ mentors, doing their homework, and having lunch before starting the afternoon session at 12:30pm. I make 4 trips between Manjangue and Chate villages each day to get the students to and from school.
    Favorite part of the job
Listening to the kids laugh on the bus.
